- Should I take advantage of military/federally
funded work programs (Public Health Service; Armed Forces Health
Professionals; Health Service Corps) to repay my student loans?
- Answer: These programs are a
good way to eliminate your education related debt, unless you are
called to the mission field. If you are called to missions service,
plan to prepare yourself to serve in the neediest place in the
quickest possible way. Be careful not to dig your way into a deep
professional and financial hole. If you are called to medical
missions, Project MedSend discourages you from participating in such
a work program for the following reasons:
- The years you spend working to pay back your
loans are lost years of ministry on the mission field that can never
be reclaimed. That is "Number One" from a ministry point of view.
People will be going into eternity without having seen Jesus in the
person of a caring health professional tending to their physical and
spiritual need.
- Those years in the service, working off the high
cost of your education, are years in the U.S. that make you more
dependent on high-tech and vulnerable to distractions of lifestyle
and family that decrease the chances that you will ever get to the
mission field.
- You will be providing medical care for people who
don’t really need you, whereas the Lord may have prepared you to go
where the need is greatest, for the sake of his Kingdom.
- Project MedSend is here to help—MedSend offers
student loan repayment grants to trained health professionals headed
for long term medical missions service.
- For those not called to missions service, careful
borrowing and dedicated loan repayment will free you from education
related debt more quickly than the 3 to 5 years you will give back
to the armed forces.
